How it started vs. how it's going

On the left is a Mythosaur by Brian Rood published in "The Bounty Hunter Code: From the Files of Boba Fett" (2013) and on the right is a Mythosaur in the latest canon Star Wars encyclopedia (2024)

Going further back, Mythosaurs were first (retroactively) depicted as far back as Marvel Star Wars #69 (1982) with the skull symbol originally being uniquely on Boba Fett's shoulder armor

Marvel Star Wars #42 started showing up in comic shops as early as this day in 1980

Often considered the first appearance of #BobaFett (although that may be incorrect – see https://daily.bobafett.com/278/), Dengar, Bossk, IG-88, and Zuckuss, as well as Slave I

Fun fact: cover dates (e.g. December 1980) used to be when they would star to pull it off the shelves, not the first in-store date – generally a few months beforehand

The original Kenner mail-away #BobaFett had a May 31, 1979 deadline

But it was extended to March 31, 1980 and even in some markets to December 31, 1980

Initially advertised with a rocket-firing feature, for safety concerns the vintage figure wasn't ever released to the public like that

They also used a who's Boba Fett explainer sticker to cover up the "back pack"

Before the cameras rolled on #BobaFett actor Jeremy Bulloch in "Return of the Jedi" (shown top center in a candid moment circa 1982), at least three other stand-ins were on set in his place: Quentin Pierre, Roy Beck, and Jack Dearlove

As noted on various call sheets for the original film, well documented when they go up for auction by Prop Store, these actors were stand-ins for several characters and even on screen, like Quentin was one of the Bespin guards escorting Solo in Carbonite for Fett in "Empire"

It's unknown if any of them suited up for camera or lighting tests, but nice to appreciate their role in production history

Earlier this week we learned that Don Francks, the voice of #BobaFett in the #StarWars Holiday Special, passed away.

Here is our tribute to remember his incredible talent, providing the very first voice of the character we all know and love. He also did the voice of Fett in the "Droids" cartoon in 1985.

Don was born February 28, 1932. He was 84 years old.

#FettFriday: No #AprilFools joke here -- this is Leia and Luke both saying "#BobaFett" aloud in "The Empire Strikes Back."

Needless to say, this moment was cut from the final film, leaving it until "Jedi" for the bounty hunter to be named aloud on screen -- aside from the "Holiday Special" in 1978 and "E.T." in 1982.

To see the whole thing, you'll need Bonus Disc 2 from the #StarWars "Complete Saga" Blu-ray set, which is available on Amazon: http://amzn.to/1MFG9l0.

(Helmet nod to Marcelo Zuniga on YouTube for amending the raw footage with music to feel more like the final film. We also dialed down a loud buzzing sound effect in this excerpt.)

#FettFriday: #BobaFett in "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial"

Elliot names all of his #StarWars action figures for his friend from outer space. At 28 minutes and 53 minutes into the film, Fett is mentioned by name. Since the film premiered in 1982, this marked the first time on the theatrical screen we heard the name "Boba Fett." He wasn't mentioned by name in The Empire Strikes Back (1980), but he was in Return of the Jedi (1983). Thanks to killerofheroes who shared our Fettpedia page on E.T. at http://j.mp/1Q200Zz on Reddit's "Today I Learned", which climbed the charts last week and introduced just about 10,000 Redditors to BFFC.

Jason Wingreen was the original voice of #BobaFett. We just learned he passed away on December 25, 2015. This is our tribute to him.

Anyone who saw "The Empire Strikes Back" in theaters or on VHS/laserdisc between 1980 and 2003 would have heard his lines. After 2004, DVD and Blu-ray releases were re-dubbed to conform to the prequels and used Temuera Morrison as Boba Fett.

Jason was born October 9, 1920. He was interviewed for Star Wars Insider #49 (May/June 2000) in which he shared this story of the role: "My agent called me and said to go over to the recording studio, where I met Gary Kurtz and Irvin Kershner. Normally, you see the face of an actor you're dubbing, so you have to lip-synch. But that was no problem here -- I could say the lines at any time. I got in position, they ran the film a few times, and I said the lines. Kershner came out and made a suggestion or two and went back in the control room, I did it again, and I was finished."

#ThrowbackThursday: Do you have an original #BobaFett action figure?

Between 1979 and 1983, the same mold for the figure was available carded and by mail-away (via proofs-of-purchase or Sears). The spring-loaded rocket pack was never produced beyond some small handful of prototypes, while some foreign versions have removable rocket pieces.

There are some noticeable differences between the figures, such as the embossed copyright mark on the leg either noting Hong Kong (light brown belt and visor), Taiwan (medium blue vs. light blue), or simply no country of origin (COO). But there are also some subtle paint and craftsmanship variations between the Kenner (USA), Kenner Tri-Logo (European, e.g. darker brown), Palitoy (UK), Poch/PBP (Spain, e.g. lighter olive green chest armor, brighter red visor and right wrist gauntlet, and deformations on the legs and rocket tip), Lili Ledy (Mexico), and Meccano (France) releases.

Present-day photo of the vintage figure by Skeleton Astronaut, shared with us on our public group on Flickr. Special thanks to @Phu_77 (Instagram) for all the information he's shared to help fact-check this post.

#FettFriday: Joe Johnston's Sketches in the "Empire Strikes Back Sketchbook" (1980)

Excerpt: "While most of the film's costume design originated in England, Ralph McQuarrie and [Joe] Johnston designed the Boba Fett outfit at Industrial Light and Magic in California. The costume was built at EMI in London, and then shipped back to Johnston to be painted. Originally the Boba Fett costume was intended to be worn by a squad of supercommandos, troops from the Mandalore system armed with weapons built into their suits. But the costume was adapted for the Boba Fett character by aging, denting, and adding a colorful paint job to one of these suits, while keeping the wrist lasers, flying backpack, and rocket darts originally intended for the supercommandos." #

#ThisMonthInHistory: Marvel Star Wars #42 was published September 23 yet had a December 1980 date on the top left.

Check out this photo of #BobaFett featured on the RPG guidebook, "Star Wars Gamemaster Screen: Revised" from West End Games in 1996. While this was mostly a distinctive cover reference only, other #StarWars RPG guidebooks have included the first appearance of Jodo Kast like "Tatooine Manhunt" in 1988.

The original soundtrack for "The Empire Strikes Back" in 1980 included the dedicated track for #BobaFett called "Departure of Boba Fett," seen here on the LP record release. Future releases of the John Williams soundtrack bundle this ode to the bounty hunter along with other adjacent tracks.

#FettFriday: The very first comic book appearance of #BobaFett is a bit of a mystery: the issue of Marvel #StarWars #42 hit newsstands in September 23, 1980 with a December 1980 date on the cover. But irregularly sized "Marvel Special Edition 2: The Empire Strikes Back" and "Marvel Comics Super Special Volume 1 #16" have the same comic within, each with Spring 1980 copyright dates. That's not all: "The Marvel Comics Illustrated Version of The Empire Strikes Back" had a release of May 1. Long story short, this cover from the comic book release is most impressive.

#ThrowbackThursday: the vintage animated television series "Droids" included one episode with #BobaFett back in 1985 called "A Race to the Finish."

Boba Fett was voiced by Don Francks (not George Buza). The episode was directed by Raymond Jafelice and written by both Peter Sauder and Steven Wright. It was made by Nelvana, the same studio who did the "#StarWars Holiday Special" animated debut of Boba Fett in 1978.

This #EmpireStrikesBack paint-by-numbers was made back in 1982 by Craft Master and features #BobaFett on the cover, although sporting quite the #JodoKast color scheme, wouldn't you say?

"#StarWars: Detours," the animated show from Seth Green ("Robot Chicken") that was shelved, may still come out after Episode 7. During an AMA on Reddit this last September, Green shared that the show -- created by George Lucas -- had "39 finished episodes and around 62 finished scripts." Here's a screenshot of how #BobaFett was pictured (which reminds us of @minibobafett). #MandalorianMonday: "The #Mandalorian Armor" (1998) was the first of three #BobaFett-centric books written by K. W. Jeter. We read about his teamwork with #Dengar and his role in the Bounty Hunter's Guild. This cover, which wraps the back (left) and the front (right) of the book, was done by Stephen Youll. What are your favorite quotes from this particular book?

In Marvel's #StarWars #81 (1984), #BobaFett is found unconscious by Jawas outside the Sarlacc after The Battle of the Great Pit of Carkoon. #ExpandedUniverse stories like this are newly considered just stories and not within the official storyline for the saga.

#ThrowbackThursday: This rare photograph of #BobaFett on the Sarlacc set for #ReturnOfTheJedi, dated January 1982, was shown in a #StarWars exhibit at the 2007 San Diego Comic Con.

We took this photo of the exhibit photo, which for some reason was shown inverted. We've yet to see it published anywhere else.

There were only a few artists online dabbling with #BobaFett art back in 1996, the same year when our #BobaFettFanClub first began. This #StarWars artwork from Australian illustrator Tony Bela was a big deal, appearing as a very accurate 3D model with a pro Photoshop finish. Bela shared one version with a clean blue background, and then soon thereafter came out with this version featuring Jabba's Palace.

In Star Wars #81, #BobaFett flew right out of the #Sarlacc -- right after the "burp" and right before being found by #Jawas and suffering from memory loss! This panel features #illustration by Ron Frenz, Thomas Palmer, and Tom Mandrake. The #comic was written by Jo Duffy, published by #Marvel, and released in 1984.

The original, weekly "#StarWars Comic Strip" included a storyline called "The Frozen World of Ota," which first introduced #BobaFett to print on June 19, 1980. Almost every day later, he appeared again until the end of the run on August 10, 1980. The #comic from writer Russ Manning and artist Al Williamson was mostly black-and-white with weekends printed in color within the newspaper. The story was later re-published in full color by #DarkHorseComics in "Classic Star Wars: The Early Adventures 9." http://www.bobafettfanclub.com/bounty/books/comics/classic_9/
