At about 15 minutes into Season 30 Episode 18, which aired March 24th, this happens in the kitchen of the Simpsons family:

Lisa: You're just a mercenary!
Bart: Mercenaries are cool, like Boba Fett!
Homer: Oh, yeah, Boba Fett. Great character.
Bart: Boba Fett's bad ass. He wears a jetpack AND a cape.
Homer: Pick a lane, weirdo.
Lisa: Why does every discussion about feminism turn into an argument about Star Wars?
Homer: If Boba Fett's such a great bounty hunter, why is his armor all banged up?
Bart: Ugh. It's a look. Like distressed denim.

#FettFriday: #BobaFett in "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial"

Elliot names all of his #StarWars action figures for his friend from outer space. At 28 minutes and 53 minutes into the film, Fett is mentioned by name. Since the film premiered in 1982, this marked the first time on the theatrical screen we heard the name "Boba Fett." He wasn't mentioned by name in The Empire Strikes Back (1980), but he was in Return of the Jedi (1983). Thanks to killerofheroes who shared our Fettpedia page on E.T. at http://j.mp/1Q200Zz on Reddit's "Today I Learned", which climbed the charts last week and introduced just about 10,000 Redditors to BFFC.

#BobaFett's backstory began in this 1995 guidebook, "#StarWars: The Essential Guide to Characters." Few official stories had elaborated on Fett's past, but author Andy Mangels did a great job at the time, writing about his then alter ego as Jaster Mereel, a journeyman protector from Concord Dawn. #FettFriday: Concept art for #BobaFett's ship, Slave I, sketched in 1979 by Nilo Rodis-Jamero, who was instrumental in its design.

Nilo was the assistant art director and visual effects creator on "The Empire Strikes Back" and costume designer on "Return of the Jedi." This sketch was most recently re-published in "The Making of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back" (2010).

"Joe Johnston showed me some of the ideas he had for Boba Fett, and I remember asking myself what his spaceship would look like. I remember seeing a radar dish and stopping to sketch it very quickly to see if I could get something out of it. The original design I had was round, but when you looked at it from the side, it became elliptical. For some reason, when I drew it, George thought it was elliptical, so that's what it became. When we were building the ship at ILM, somebody looked at street lamps and pointed out that they look like Boba's ship. So everyone began to think that was where I got the idea for the design."

The group standing before Vader is a bizarre array of galactic fortune hunters: There is Bossk, a slimy, tentacled monster with two huge, bloodshot eyes in a soft baggy face; Zuckuss and Dengar, two battle-scarred, mangy human types; IG-88, a battered, tarnished chrome war droid; and Boba Fett, a man in a weapon-covered armored space suit.

#ThrowbackThursday: Sarlacc Food No More. In case you missed it, yesterday J.W. Rinzler (Lucasfilm's historian) confirmed that George Lucas does indeed believe #BobaFett survived the Sarlacc.

While we've had no less than five Sarlacc "survivor" storylines, after Disney bought Lucasfilm, all of these Expanded Universe ideas were officially tossed aside. Yesterday's public declaration on Rinzler's Reddit AMA is only the second time Lucas has said Fett lives, after many times saying Fett dies. And this time it wasn't just a hot mic picking up Lucas like at the 2012 Star Wars Celebration VI convention.

While #BobaFett used aliases like #SarlaccFood and #SavaBrecMadak in the 1996 comic strip "Twin Engines of Destruction," Andy Mangels first coined the name of "Jaster Mereel" in relation to #BobaFett. In the #ExpandedUniverse, that name was used consistently, although it evolved to mean something and someone else (who was killed off). But that's commonplace. In the short story, "Last Man Standing," published in the 1996 book "Tales of the Bounty Hunters," we have these two great quotes: "One tale tells of Fett being a failed stormtrooper who killed his commanding officer. ... A third account tells of a Journeyman Protector from Concord Dawn named Jaster Mereel who adopted the mask and guise when he was convicted of treason." In this panel from the comic, we can see part of his scars after escaping the #Sarlacc.

Joe Johnston, who celebrates his birthday today, designed #BobaFett: "I designed the final version of Boba Fett. Ralph and I both worked together on preliminary designs, and we traded ideas back and forth. Originally, Boba Fett was part of a force we called Super Troopers, and they were these really high-tech fighting units, and they all looked alike. That eventually evolved into a single bounty hunter. I painted Boba's outfit and tried to make it look like it was made of different pieces of armor. It was a symmetrical design, but I painted it in such a way that it looked like he had scavenged parts and had done some personalizing of his costume; he had little trophies hanging from his belt, and he had little braids of hair, almost like a collection of scalps." -- #StarWars: The Annotated Screenplays

If the #ExpandedUniverse is out, we could still see #BobaFett escape the Sarlacc. The official storyline just won't mirror the variety of versions already: #Jawas, #Dengar, and/or being "simply indigestible." If the official word on the street is that the jetpack-clad bounty hunter is still officially down in the pit after this #ReturnOfTheJedi moment -- pictured here in a painting by Dave Dorman -- it could also mean that 1) he's not necessarily dead and 2) he could escape in one of the new Disney/Lucasfilm films. What do you think?
