Previous years relied on browser cookies, which could be deleted to vote again. This year, it’s fancy and we can’t quite figure out how they’re doing it. There’s some AJAX. There’s Disney’s API server. While deleting cookies can make you think you’re voting again, there’s a JavaScript warning that notes a “409 conflict” if voting twice. We’re impressed.
However, this year the vote tally is visible before voting. (It was always showing after submitting one vote, even on repeat visits to the site.) This gives casual fans a way to see who’s more popular already, rather than a standard blind vote. Maybe it’s affecting the totals, maybe it isn’t, but it’s different this year and we’re not fans of it.
Furthermore, as of 4pm on March 18th, we’ve seen some social media posts that the poll is hackable, seeming to accept more than one vote from the same person/computer without any errors. This suggests the poll is, like in years past, not an accurate popularity contest.
