Retrospective on Boba Fett in Vintage Marvel Comics
Moments ago, Marvel announced it will be handling all Star Wars comics and graphic novels as of 2015. This returns to how Star Wars was first adapted in 1977, until Dark Horse Comics took over the tired series with a re-boot in the late 90’s, where we saw an edgier but equally creative/explorative expanded universe.
In part 1 of 2 posts, we look back at how Boba Fett was portrayed in these vintage Marvel Comics:
- Star Wars #42 (1980) introduced Boba Fett in a straight adaptation of “Empire”
- Star Wars #68 (1983) had the first reference to the Mandalorians, such as Tobbi Dala and Fenn Shysha
- Star Wars #69 continues the storyline with Tobbi and Fenn
- Star Wars #81 “Jawas of Doom” (1984) deviated from the movie adaption and had Jawas outside the Sarlacc rescue Boba Fett, who in this issue has temporary amnesia
- Star Wars #99 has Fenn Shysa joins forces with the Rebels
- Star Wars #100 “First Strike” (1985) includes Princess Leia talking with Fenn Shysa
- Star Wars #101 (1985) continues the storyline
- Star Wars #107 “All Together Now” (1986) includes Han Solo, Princess Leia, and Fenn Shysa among others
By comparison, Dark Horse Comics released many, many more Boba Fett comics. Here’s to looking ahead where we might get the best win-win of new and old.
