Topic: Just Wondering

I was just wondering have any of you guys at least thought about giving up Star Wars because of bullies around school or even work or for any other reason. The reason why I ask this is because my friend is a Trekie and he almost gave it up because he was constantly getting bullied and stuff because of it.

Re: Just Wondering

I've thought about giving up Star Wars several times. Not because of anyone near my age though...My mom keeps going on these anti-scifi/fantasy rampages and makes me feel like a failure, and a sinner, and that I'm doing nothing with my life...on and on and on. But I like it. I'm finishing high school like she was never able to, and I'm not going to stop liking something because someone else tells me to.

Everyone is different, and that sucks that kids at school bother you about it. Star Wars in the end is just a story someone told. There's no reason for anyone to get bothered about liking a story, or loving it. ...and screw conformity. What's the fun in being like all those "normal" people?

Re: Just Wondering

Nobody should take Star Wars too seriously, and if you know someone getting bullied because he's a trekkie or he's a Star Wars fan, it's probably the bully taking things too seriously. Not many of my friends have even watched Star Wars but noone's getting bullied for watching it.

Everyone should check out this movie. Too bad only chapter 1's ready.

I'm not going to say don't listen to your mom, but remember no person has the power to damn another. I went to school down south, with the Bible thumpers, and was damned by them so many times for music, games (Magic the Gathering) and Star Wars that all it did was toughen my resolve to do the things that I wanted to do. So follow what you feel comfortable with and remember that your life is yours.

Re: Just Wondering

Like what you like, and be yourself. If other people like you, and yet you don't like yourself, what kind of life is that? Sure people may get at you now, but once you're out of school, how can they ever hurt you again? And what kind of example is it anyway, the other fans who are yet to be found out by the bullies, if they see you getting pushed around they might not want to be fans anymore, and then we'll lose fans. We have to stand strong and be ourselves. If people look at you weird just smile at them and shrug, even maybe say, "Yeah, I'm weird. big_smile" I've done that. I might not have any actual friends in RL, but people at work accept me as I am. And if, like when I waited in line for ROTS for 8+ hours (in the rain!) and the people at work were surprised at me, I just told them, "Oh, it was lots of fun."

As for parent problems, live with it. You'll be 18 soon enough. I had to live with it. My mom isn't against SW or scifi, but thought that I was too obessed with SW, that it was unhealthy, I should find other interests, I'm so boring now that all I like is one thing (I like several things, not just SW....), etc. I just put up with it, now I'm on my own, in my own house, and if I want to sit at my computer all day, I can. If I want to watch Star Wars all day I can. If I want to spend my paychecks on Star Wars stuff, what can she say about it. Maybe to make her happy do things with her sometimes, like watch her favorite movie with her sometimes, or just any other thing she likes to do. Then maybe she'll feel better when watching you get into SW a lot.

If it's something you enjoy, then stick with it. Later in life how often will you really see those kids from school? And if you do what kind of position would they be in to torment you? And maybe by then they'd grow up, especially if you ignore them while they're young. If you have to, maybe stop talking so loudly about it for a while, give them time to find other people to pick on.

Reality doesn't care if you believe in it.

Re: Just Wondering

I'm new here, just thought I'd put my two cents in...  smile

I'm 32 yrs old and never cared what anyone thought about me liking Star Wars.  I'm secretary of the state club, and I go to conventions with my friends.  I've met a lot of intelligent, interesting people over the years through Star Wars events.  Nothing wrong with it if you ask me.  It's all good clean fun...  smile  Everyone is entitled to their opinon though.  Some like it, some don't.

Re: Just Wondering

yeah, I always just say to myself that us "geeks" will be the bosses of the the "cool" kids someday and besides I've never even thought about giving up SW because of bullies in fact I'm in a D&D club and we're all proud to be geeks we say it all the time.

I have thought about it though because my mom is constsntly saying that if I end up liking it too much I'll start living in a fantasy world and I'll never be able to do anything with my life and I'll just waste my money on Props and stuff like that and so on.

Did you steal that avatar from me in the Avatar requests thread?

Re: Just Wondering

People who think differently to others do generally cop some slack. But don't worry about it. You have to be yourself, if you are into Star Wars then that's part of who you are. Don't be a lemming - they jump off cliffs tongue

There's a lot of truth in what Miba and the others say. Believe me, once you've finished school and left home you can do pretty much want you want. Plus there's much less pressure from your peers and you tend to chose your friends more wisely. wink

Re: Just Wondering

My brothers and I went to see every Star Wars film together since they started coming out,so it's pretty much a family affair. Sure I like SW but I still have my feet firmly planted on terra firma and the masses are @SSeS as the saying goes. You just gotta be yourself.

Re: Just Wondering

My friends knew I was the "spaced-out" one from the moment they met me...they're used to it! tongue  I've always been the weird one and they can swear I'm from another planet anyway.  I was bullied a bit in junior high, but not for being a SW fan. I was really shy, quiet, one of the smart kids and I guess I seemed like an easy target.  I did give up a lot of my SW stuff once, but that will never happen again.

I'm much different now--not so shy, I work out and my attitude has changed.

I agree--be yourself no matter what.  When I got married, I did change and not all for the better.  The past couple of years, I'm getting back to being ME and feeling much better for it.  My husband just has to suffer if he doesn't like me having Star Wars on the brain tongue
