Let talk about WW2

May 30, 2008 11:40 pm #

Ooooooooooo, a WW II thread.  Schweet.  I've been into WW II since I was a kid: the planes, tanks, and weapons used.  The leaders and heros from it. Etc.

Anything specific you want to discuss Karson?  Or any questions anybody else has?

Another proud achievement in Canada's military history.  Cool beans.

Yup, there were a lot of Canadians in WW II; in some Hell'ashious fights to.   They got really tore up during that landing *I forget the name of the operation* near Caan; was back around '42 I think; way before D-Day.  But they made up for it on D-Day; they had a big part in that

The Canadians also helped to close the Gap in France.

I don't even have words for that. I'll simply settle for saying that that will likely earn you a whole spree of negative points--including myself, as soon as is possible again. Seriously, though. What's your problem?

Anyone seen Band of Brothers? Thats a GREAT WWII series.

I'm proud of my great-uncle that fought in it, and all the soldiers that did. (He fought in the Pacific Theatre, Aleutian Isles).

HAS anyone seen Band of Brothers though? It gives you a great look at the war, following the lives of the men of Easy company from their training, to D-day, to Market Garden, and all the way into Germany and Hitlers Eagle's Nest.

Yeah I've seen it, as you said, GREAT series. Looking to buy them on DVD, but it's just so darn expensive.
And as for the war, it was a necessity. If we had not intervened, (Like WWI) Germany could possibly have gained control over Europe and Africa, and we all know that wouldn't have been good.

It really is. We rented them, at first. But my uncle works for HBO, and we got them as a Christmas Gift. That was lucky, cus we probably wouldn't have just purchased them--they are expensive. HBO's doing a new series, set in the Pacific Theatre, that I think comes out next year.

really, it's not that expensive here.. i got it for xmas last year, even though i watched the entire series on the History Channel, really awesome series. speaking of ww2 on tv, what about movies? there's hundreds of WW II movies. which ones do u guys like? mine would be... Saving Ryan's Privates (lol), Letters from Iwo Jima, Flags of our Fathers, The Great Raid, and more i can't think of right now.

and yea WWII was a necessity. most people don't know, but Hitler had planned to stretch the war another 10 years and eventually invade America (so all those video games of Nazis in America aren't too far-out). you learn stuff from the History Channel about WWII, especially around April, June, December, and August.

June 23, 2008 2:01 pm #

The Great Raid was great. I really liked it. Also, they were pretty close to developing a nuke. Another year or two, and I believe they would have had it.

You now have a problem with me, too.

Back on topic, my Great-Great Grandpa fought in WWI. Sadly, he died after the war was over because he had a stomach ulcer. The stupid hospital wouldn't let him in because he was an Irish immigrant.

Except the Empire never lived in peace. And at the cost of over 11 million murders, and millions more killed in the fighting.

For one if anyone here was a Jew they wouyld hunt you down and beat the living heck out of you and who could blame them.

And second Nazis should not be compared to Empire, Empire is actually good and they are not evil. Imperials had peace and Nazis did not.

In short the Empire is not bad, Just misunderstood so the average fighting stormtrooper is actually good and not evil.
Nazis however are either knowingly bad or plain ignorant like you.

Empire is actually in a way the goodies(sorry for using the baby word).

The first article I read in the previously published men's magazine 'Stuff' was "WAR WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR???  ACTUALLY, A LOT"

Despite the tragedy that accompanies armed conflict there is a lot of very good and positive things that stem from war.

It helped define the two Superpowers

Ushered in the NUCLEAR ERA

Modernized our methods of fighting war, thus reducing the number of casualties per engagment (WWI saw over 1 million casualties in one battle)

Medical breakthroughs, enabliling better quality and quanity of life for all

Japan as an ally, and innovator in electronics

Germany is a free democracy

NATO

and many more innovations that are to many to mention.

NAZIS, we all agree were bad people, but the GERMAN soldier (not the SS) were just like the rank and file STORMIES doing their job, and while I do not like what they did, even under orders, I can still respect the quality of their service and their fighting spirit.

Hitler actually did alot, most of those things were bad.But he was responsible for the Autobahn, the best highway system in the world, and I'm pretty sure he was also responsible for youth hostels, which are still used by travelers under 21 to this date. Do some research.

Karson, no, most of the transport cars and trucks were not VW's. Only two vehicles were ever used by the Nazi's that were VW's. Mercedez produced nearly all the vehicles as well as the planes.

For some examples of Mercedez automobiles being used by the Nazis in WWII, watch this immensly entertaining video. http://www.metacafe.com/watch/665335/indiana_jones_i_truck_fight_scene/

i can't believe i'm reading some of these posts........

I don't give a good God damn if he was a crossing guard for the local kindergarten......  He is DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MURDER MILLIONS OF PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!

And a couple of you want to take time out to say he's not really all that bad because he ordered the construction of the Autobahn, or because he "invented" the friggin' Volkswagon *as if he was personally on the reserch team....maybe there'd have been millions of lives saved on all sides if he had been.*  Maybe some or all of this is tongue-in-cheek, and i pray that it is.....but some of you should really think about this stuff before posting, as it's a very serious thing for many.  If there are any Jews or members who are personally connected to people who suffered the horrors incured by Hitler and his regime here on the boards, I'm sure they'd agree

Even though he did help his country in some, there is no way that makes him a better person in my mind.  He still is despicable Autobahn or not.  Hitler is not remembered for the autobahn, he's remembered for the Holocaust.

Exactly. Any good thing he did in his life does NOT make up for the fact that he is responsible for 11 million murders.

If anyone here is accusing me of being a nazi or something like that, I'm definitely not. And I'm NOT defending Hitler so if anyone even suggests that as one of you already seems to be thinking then THEY need to think before they post, and before they jump to conclusions. The Holocaust was revolting, I have been to Auschwitz I have seen the ruins. I am NOT trying to make it seem like it wasnt a big deal and I'm not trying to defend the man responsible for it because he made a very nice highway system and a good car for the people of Germany. I am simply saying that dispite every thing he did, he was also responisble for two very small good things. That does nothing to lessen the evil he commited, it does nothing to redeem him. If ANYONE anyone at all, even suggests that I am supporting Adolf Hitlers actions then I swear  I will never speak to them, and If I ever see them I'll break their nose.

Not you sev. And the reputation of Adolf Hitler is well deserved, but I am just saying that even though everyone sees him as ultimate evil (They were pretty right in doing so) there was still the slight potential for good in him. Even though the good he did was insignificant compared to all the other things.

The topic of this thread IS World War II.  It just struck me as unsettling that the discustion in such a thread would turn to Hitler's 'good works.'

I never thought any of the members here are Nazis *well, with maybe the exception of SOS...*, and I'm glad that this has been reaffirmed.  I just wanted to put into clear perspective that anything good Hitler did or had potential to do totally paled in comparison to the horrendous actions against humanity that he committed.

HA! But you know in World War 2 The Germans were Nationalist, which means that they were all about making their country better, they where not communist like some people think. The only "power" in WW 2 that was Communist was the Soviet Union. And their where transport and combat vehicles that were VWs, along with  Mercedez. And did you know that the Panzers and Tiger/Panther tanks where designed by Freudian (spelling) Porsche!

ummm...... Nationalist or Nationalism just means fervent or narrow minded patriotism, and is a term a lot of totalitarian regimes throw around.  Look it up.

Nazi German ran on a Dictatorship.  Hitler manipulated the masses and their terrible conditions in post-WWI and Great Depression Germany to forward himself and his 'Nazi Party' into power.  He essentially used gang tactics combined with his powerful charismatic talents.

He tried to seize power in the 'Revolution of 1923,' failed and was imprisoned.  While in the can, he wrote 'Mein Kampf.'  The book outlined his theories and political aims.  It gave the German people targets to aim all their frustrations for the terrible economic situation, the defeat in WWI, and gave them a measure of hope.  The targets were primarily the Jews and Communism *which is ironic, since his political organization that he founded soon after release from prison he called 'The National Socialist German Workers.'  Socialism being the foundation of communism, and directly targeting the poor 'workers' for his base, must as the Russian Communist Revolution did.*

In 1933/34, Hitler became Chancellor of Germany.  Here's where the 'gang tactics' came into play.  He outlawed all political parties other then his own, arrested any political opponents to his power or programs, vastly expanded the powers of his office, and murdered in the famous 'Night of the Long Knives' all members of his own party who might challenge him.

The point to my history lesson there is that it's little different to the Communist Russians.  You have a political party controlling every aspect of an entire nation's day to day life *Communist party in Russia, Nazi party in Germany,* you have a dictatorial leader controlling said party *Hitler of course in Germany, Stalin in Russia,* and you have populace who is subordinate to the will of the government.

And keep in mind, Russia and Germany were allies up until the Nazis broke the treaty and invaded Russia in June of '42.  They co-opted the invasion of Poland, and Russia invaded *but failed to conquer* Finland at about the same time.

Point is, there's not a lot of difference between the two, despite the fact they hated each others guts

Karson Fett wrote:

uhhhh......yes, i'm aware of that.......but who cares?  What bearing is there on the discussion that VW's and Mercedes vehicles were used?  If this is going back to the 'Hitler "invented the VW" thing again, recheck my post reminding you that he wasn't exactly on the design team.

And yes, I'm also aware that the Porsche firm was involved with the production of some German tanks.  However, they generally offered failed designs or were outclassed by the competing Henschel, Krupp, and MAN companies.  However, Germany had a complicated system of using several company per vehicle, with one making the engine, another making the chase, and some other group producing the turret sometimes.  The selection varried depending on the company's design and on their political favor.  If I recall, Porsche was close to Hitler for a time, and was one of the primary reasons they kept getting requested for contract bids, but they fell from favor for some reason around the time of the King Tiger contract, on which they had a turret concept that was initially accepted.  Only 50 of the turrets were used before getting replaced with the blocky'er looking Henschel design.

Yes Nationalism is the feeling that ones' country is better than all the rest.  Napoleon is a prime example of a nationalistic person.

Yes.  It's commonly thought to be a political system/type of government, but as far as I know that's not the case.

I know a little about World War II.  I love looking at pictures of the tanks and airplanes; some were really amazing!

My favorite tank has to be the German Panzers!  Not that I like the nazies or anything, but they had some really cool tanks and stuff!

The The Flying Tiger planes are my favorite fighter planes!  The teeth and faces on those was just scary!

If you run, I can track you. If you hide, I will find you. If you fight, I will watch you fall......
October 14, 2008 6:04 pm #

Well, remember, "Panzer" isn't 'A' tank in itself; it's just the word Germans used For tanks in general.

But I agree, German tanks were amazing pieces of work, and had there been more of them *thankfully there weren't*, the war might have gone differently.

The Tiger I:

And the Jagdpanther:

..are probably my favorites.  Wish they'd been on our side...

And as for the Flying Tigers planes, yeah, the old P-40 Warhawks and Tomahawks were beautiful fighters, and the chin scoops were perfect for the shark face.

That design of face never looked nearly as good to me on any other plane, except for maybe the A-10

P-51 Mustang is probaby my favorite American fighter, but it's a close call with several others I really love... and that's just the American planes
