I read on Wookieepedia that if Star Wars episode 4 was a financial failure Lucas was going to make Splinter of the Minds eye(A famous Star Wars book) the Low budget sequel. But if it was a succes he would do Empire Strikes Back and the rest of the Star Wars films we know so well today.

Star Wars's budget was 11 million and it grossed(made) 740 million in its box office performance which is about 70 times what it cost to make so it was a HUGE financial succes, so he did Empire strikes back and the rest of the saga.

But still its a funny thought about what would have happened had Splinter been made instead of Empire stikes back. Obviously with Star Wars's huge finacial succes it would not have happened though but it's still a funny thought.

But there are other things that make it make sense

e.g. Harison Ford's contract said he would not do any sequels if the movie was a commercial failure. thus Han is not in Spinter book. star wars was a huge success so he did sequels

I didn't think Splinter of the Minds Eye was written until after the movie had been made. It was also very contradictory to TESB. Probably just another money maker on Lucas' part :P

I don't even consider SOTME to be canon.

Having read SOTME i don't consider it cannon either. I barely had the foritude to finish reading it, and even for a Star Wars die hard like myself it was hard to take. Its innacurate even to the standards of A New Hope, which i think was at least written when SOTME was.  I think we can replace that book with Zahn's much much better book Alligance, which it is to be durning the same time; that being between Ep IV and Ep V.

I have heard about Ford's reluctance to do a sequal to A New Hope, for fear of being type casted as Han Solo. Time has shown that he wasn't the one to worry about that and the rest of his co-stars should have.

But seriously, if Star Wars was a commercial failue Lucas would have made SOTME the sequel instead of ESB and all the other Star Wars films.

however as Star Wars was a huge success with critics and one of the biggest comercial successes of all time he did the big budget ESB and the other Star Wars films which all had big budgets

...besides, I think GL is quoted somewhere as saying he made ANH so that if it flopped it could stand alone by itself and he wouldn't have to make any sequels. I think I read it in an old Insider.

Yeah and if it had flopped who would have given Lucas money to make a sequel? No one. I think it's just a rumour...

I'm just thankful the franchise survived long enough for Fett to be created.

He may have made ANH for no sequels if it flopped but if it made more than its budget he still would have done SOTME
