Topic: Computer Help

I am not super knowlageable about computers and lately its just be one thing after another. I figure I'd ask you guys.

I NEED to get myself my own laptop, but I wont untill i can get the internet working on my sisters laptop, so i know it will be working for my new fancy machine.

I am having problems setting up a wireless network on the computer, because now i just am able to steal an open wireless signal. This is where i get the problem of having the computer saying i am connected to the internet, being able to run messinger and yet not load any web pages.When i try to set up wireless network with the high speed dsl modem (IT HAS AN ANTENNA THINGY! and is on the verizon website for the this purpose) the laptop says this error 871122. When I go online and try the steps they say.. the results are different than what mircosoft says it should be.

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm not even sure which tech support to start fighting with first.

Don't use the wizard, do it manually.

Well i do have the working desk top at home as well, its just that my time on that one is limited due to... family limitations (?) Its really in the "office" ( aka my parents space) and they like to kick me off and go to bed before i get home many times. ( Like last night. I can't get on when I get home at 12:45)

You go through internet options, I think, to do it manually. You'll need your username and password. And I don't remember a whole lot, it's been so long since I've done it.

My husband charges 14.00/hr for this sorta thing. ;) Though I think tech support is free, so that's the better way to go.

What do you mean by not loading web pages.
Is it coming up and saying it can't find the server?
Or is it just flat not loading?

Some times the wireless networks can be locked, which means you can't get on the internet, but you still get the
signal.

oh don't worry, my home pc has needed to die for the last two years. i cannot wait until i get a new laptop (old one died out, it was obsolete anyways).

I hope its free! Otherwise i would rather pay your husband. ( I know you just like saying it)

Part of my next debate is whether i should spend the money on a MacBook over a nice HP. The MacBook would only be like $300 more than the pc.  Gah I wish i knew  just what to do when it came to this inferanal machines :P Why can't they be easy like cars?

It all depends, do you want to spend all that money on a mac?

I really just want to not have to spend any money and have things magically appear..... especially since I'm trying to get my own place.

Well, especially if you're trying to get your own place the cheaper option is better.

300 dollars might not seem like a whole lot now, but come time to pay the rent you'll need it.

An Acer is a decent cheap computer, they work well, for their price.
