Hmm for some things yes, but other things no. I actually preferred the model ships as the texture looked more real in the older films. However for the city landscapes it did look impressive.
I would have to agree with Mel on those points. The Ships had more texture in Ep IV- VI, but then again the Nubian class ships weren't really supposed to have texture. They were intended to look smooth and chomed out. But places such as Coruscant would have looked foolish if attempted back in the old days. It would have looked like New York at best.
You could also tell that they came a long way in the time between Ep I and Ep III because you have a digital character like Jar- Jar that looks almost pathetic next to the digital character of General Gervious. ( Well thats my opninion anyway :P)
do you think lucas should redo the origionals with more CGI
e.g. CGI Jabba( in eppy 6 to be consistant with eppy 4) or ewoks
Actually I think Jabba looked better in ROTJ, again texture wise. However you couldn't get the slug to move as a puppet :P There's definitely more possibilities with CGI in what you can do, but I think it needs to get that "real" look of texture (picky me :P )

I totally agree, and I think one of the few good things about Ep. I was that he tried to keep to the models more, but let himself get carried awaqy in the later movies
The Star Destroyers and all the other ships in the old movies looked much more real then the CGI generated ships in the new movies. Also, I think they used a CGI 'touching up' affect on most of the clones, Vader *after he got in the armor* and such that makes most all of them look sorta fake to me, even though much of the time it really is a guy in a suit
I like the CGI in the films.
I can also understand why he would use them. Instead of looking for landscape and settlements that match what he needs, he can create exactly what he wants. There is also then a lot fewer filming restrictions due to this (He faced many challenges when filming the Tatooine scenes for the film A new hope)
If he could have used the CGI in the original films then he would have done.
but with CGI there are less limits to what you can do
but admittadly i did like the puppet yoda in eppy 5 but in eppy 6 and 1 it didn't look so good
i think we can all admit that lucas uses CGI a bit to much but CGI went perfectly well with eppy 1,2,3
I agree with all who say that the models they used had a more realistic feel to them because of the texture, but also keep in mind that the prequels are set in a time of relative peace, so there was no need to cut short on making ships look slick, like the naboo fighters. But as the Clone Wars start you can see that ships are getting more textured.
And in my opinion, GL really did a great job with most of the CGI. CGI has improved a lot (thanks to movies like SW and LOTR) since ep I and it will continue to improve.
