Harry Potter is terrible I can't beleive anyone can make money off of those books.
Harry Potter is not epic
not dark what so ever
it does not feel like you are taken to another world it feels like I could take a plan there and be there in a matter of hours.
Harry Potter should really be a Warlock, a wizard refers to a mortal with the ability to do magic
The movies are even worse there are no good design elemements, I would rather watch the Star Wars Holiday Special
I could keep on going all day, but the one good thing is John Williams did the soundtrack for the movies but not enough to redem them.
I'm not one to defend the series, but the wizard/warlock idea is a bit of. He is mortal, as he can die. He cannot be a warlock because he did not sell his soul to a demon. The female practitioners of magick, however, should not be called witches.
take it easy baby take it as it comes

But yeah, I felt cheated during the Snape's Worst Memory scene, not enough of adorable young Snape, not even a single glance of Lily! Hopefully they'll have the whole scene on DVD.
But yeah, Bella was awesome, as well as Lucius!! Sirius's death was a laugh though, I hated the chessy "everything goes silent" death.
Fett II- I saw that on Mugglenet... I'm not sure if I trust it though... seems like a good opening. It just seems so vague! J. K. Rowling usually writes with much more description, especially about settting up the begining of her books.
Huh... I wonder who to taller man is.. I don't think it would be LV for some reason... ??
Nah I don't think it's Voldemort either, I'm thinking it's another Death Eater.

One thing about how she writes, I find it annoying. The first 2 books were good, but after they began being made into movies she started putting in so much description. In my opinion, books are meant to be left up to your imagination.

Doesn't description go hand in hand with imagination though? I mean, one person's fuzzy red chair might not be another's fuzzy red chair, you know? It's all in interpretation.

No but it became the fuzzy red chair with a nice velvet covering that had a lump in the middle but the rest was extremely soft.

Just out of curiosity, why did you read this thread when you dislike the Harry Potter books so much?
And obviously so much money has been made from them as lots of people really enjoy reading the books (like how I do) Just because you do not like it does not mean that everyone shouldn’t do as well.
The world would not be an interesting place if we all liked the same things.

The guy who created the pet rock became a millionaire, and you are surprised a book sold...
Define epic...
It can't be extremely dark or kids wouldn't want to read it. And since it is technically still mostly geared toward teens, I'm pretty sure its dark enough.
Who said anything about taking you to another world, It's based in london.
Harry should not be a warlock, get your facts straight. This statement you made jus proves you are trying to find faults in the book for no reason.
No design element? I took film analysis this year in school, and I can tell you that even if you hate the films, you can find clear "design elements".
I am not a HP fanboy, I just think the books are interesting. But if you are going to complain about it, don't make up things to bash the book. At least find real problems with them.
Good... Bad... I'm the one with the gun.
Hail to the King Baby!!
and don't bring up that crap about how it makes kids want to practice Witchcraft, that's what the idiots down in the south who love Jesus too much are for.
omg, this topic is already getting out of hand. Everyone has their own opinions, so lets just all try to respect that... sithpspit, you are free to dislike the books as much as you like, but this is a topic about "DEATHLY HALLOWS" not a topic about "All the things wrong with the Harry Potter series."
Draco, you would be right if Hogwarts was a school for Wiccans... but HP has nothing to do with Wicca, so there's nothing wrong with females being referred to as witches.
Anyways... how many days to you all plan on reading Deathly Hallows in? I think, unfortunately, it may take me up to a week, with work and all. From that time, I plan on avoiding the internet at all costs!!
Manji_Ninja wrote:Draco, you would be right if Hogwarts was a school for Wiccans... but HP has nothing to do with Wicca, so there's nothing wrong with females being referred to as witches.
The original definition of a witch states that they must sell their soul to a demon and partake in Black Masses.

That may be, but thats not excactly what a witch is. While in many places and religions it is thought of as somebody dealing with the devil, it is not a necessary requirement to be a witch.
a person, now especially a woman, who professes or is supposed to practice magic, especially black magic or the black art; sorceress.
So, just to straighten things out...

Well, I read the rest of them on an average of 2 days per book. (Less for the shorter ones) so I would guess two to three, depending on my levels of distraction at that time. ;)
Jealousy is the tribute mediocrity pays to genius.~ Fulton J. Sheen
Depending on whether or not there's something in the book that annoys me...a day to a year. I'm going to read it just to be done with the series, well, there is a little curiosity involved I suppose.

I am not sure how long it will take me to read the book. It all depends on how much reading time I can get (that will be challenging with three small younglings) but as soon as I have got the book I will not be switching on my computer again until I have finished it :D

I think Lucus and JK rowlinmg should have teamed up and made the final book.
Harry Pothead could be fighting Voltamorty and be sucked into another Galaxy. All the Wizards and stuff team up with the Rebels and the Voltamorty guy teams up with the Empire. Boba Fett kills like 50 guys before getting bored and leaving.
At the end, the universe blows up and everyone dies and dies over again until god gets bored and blows everything up with some super nuke. But Boba Fett lives and so does Ron. The end.
"Just because Boba is smarter than Jango doesn't mean Jango is retarded."
I have the entire weekend off, so I plan to do nothing but read and avoid the internet until I'm done. I hope. If I don't have it done by Sunday night I'll read it right after work on Monday.

Hehe that will be fun for you, are you a quick reader?
It would not be wise for me to do that.
I am already preparing for the release of the book. I am working on getting as much housework done as possible so that I will have little to do when I would like to read the book. As I have already said I will also be not switching on the computer until I have finished so that will also give me the whole night to read. Hopefully it should not take too long.
I am really looking forward to this Friday :D

ps- are u gonna go to that museum of natural history where JK is reading the book?
That is funky :D
Sadly I will not be going to the museum. There is no way for me to be able to get to London. I will be going to Edinburgh. I am rather sad that she has decided to go to London though :( (that was where she wrote the book)

that stinks. i can't get to London anytime (considering i live in the states).
I know :( I am still going to have a funky night though :D I will meet up with a friend, have something to eat before going to watch the latest Harry Potter film. After that we will collect our copies of the book.
Another reason why it will be a funky night is that it will be the first night that I have been away from my younglings since they were born (that is nearly 3.5 years) it will be strange as well.
That is a shame that you cannot make it as well but it is completely understandable.

oh f**k. my friend just sent me a link that contains MAJOR SPOILERS. if anybody wants me to post the link (im half n half on believing this junk), just say so.
I love working in a store sometimes. I went into the backroom around 6:15 this morning. Lo and behold... a wheeler with eight white boxes on it with red lettering all saying "HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS" with red tape on them saying, "DO NOT OPEN UNTIL JULY 21, 2007". :D It was... chilling. I was almost scared to reach out and touch the box, but I did. A thin layer of cardboard between me and the books.... Of course we quickly locked them away in our safe room. But still. I got to touch the boxes they come in!!!!

Ahh! All this Harry Potter buisness is driving me nuts! I can understand how someone can love something, I mean I actually have found people that do not love Star Wars (shocking I know) but to me this Harry Potter buisness is rotting to the mind. (I'm sorry if you do like it, I mean no offence, and I like you no less).

I just found out the ending, and let me tell you, it's a doozy! So, if you don't wanna know, avert your eyes:
Voldemort is actually the ghost of Harry's father who's real name was Rosebud, Hermione is actually Harry's daughter who came back in time from the future to save him from the Dursleys, who are actually killer robots from the future, and Hedwig is actually Harry's mom, who accidently turned herself into an owl one night while she was on a drinking binge. In the end, it turns out Ron is actually the Chosen One from the prophecy, and uses the force to kill the real villian who was pulling all the strings: Neville Longbottom. They both perish in the final battle, and Hermione dies when she causes the Dursley robots to explode, and Harry, over come with grief, retires to the wilds of Peru where he raises minature goats with Hedwig and Voldemort/Rosebud. Pretty shocking, huh?

that's not the ending, the ending is here.
I finished it a half hour ago. It was amazing. I know I freaked out and cried and hyperventilated and nearly threw up over one death. The very next chapter cheered me up considerably however. It is a dark book, look at SS, then compare it to this one and... wow.

I am glad that you enjoyed it.
It really is a dark book and as you said compared to the first book. It is going to be interesting to see how they adapt that into a film.
I am about to start re-reading it so that I ill hopefully catch anything that I missed.

I'll probably end up getting the book once the wave of hype, and probably price, lowers.
I found that the series has too many deux ex machines for me.

yea, i'm gonna start re-reading soon. not that i missed anything, i just wana do it to get more of it absorbed into my head.
I just finished tonight, would have been yesterday but was stuck at work all day!!
I was so incredibly anxious throughout the whole book, I could barely eat.
Miba- I reacted the same way. I was bawling like a baby, I felt rather childish, probably because my brother was reacting to me like I was insane! I know, the next chapter was probably my favorite, even though it made me cry even more.... and the epilogue... I expect something more ... but it was still cute.... Harry's dialogue to his son on the second to last page had me in tears again.
anyway, I would speak more plain, but I don't want major spoillers floating around...
I'm on page 200-something of my second read through. This one really has a completely different feel to it then the others, I wont say anything because I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but it was my favorite of all of them. Stayed up for twelve hours after I bought it to finish it in one sitting. That it's the last of them all is rather depressing, though being able to go back and reading them in order should be fun.

July 23, 2007 1:11 pm (Edited July 23, 2007 01:16 pm) # Manji- Yes, the next chapter is my favorite as well, I've been saying most of what's in that chapter for months, though not in specific as in the certain scenes, but as in the general idea.
I didn't cry over that Harry-son dialogue, but I did tear up some.
The last chapter was a bit anticlimatic, I had a lot of trouble keeping names straight.
